The premier world amateur tournament ran from 28 May until 31 May 2008, with results and some game records posted daily.

Korea (Ha Sung Bong) won the tournament in a very close (1/2 point!) match with China (Guo Yuzheng). Argentina (Fernando Aguilar) came an excellent 3rd. New Zealand's representative (Zhou Juhua) came top of the 4-win category in 25th place, one of our best finishes in recent years. Watch his 7th-round game.

[edit] History: predictions from NZ "expert" before the tournament started

Tournament favourites are 15-year-old Guo Yuzheng from China, 26-year-old Ha Sung Bong from Korea, and 35-year-old Tsuchimune Yoshiyuki from Japan. The 21-year-old American representative, Mozheng Guan, may be good for an upset or two.

The strongest of the Western players looks like being 48-year-old Fernando Aguilar from Argentina, although his recent form has not been great. Burzo of Romania and Balug of Hungary are on the rise and might be worth watching. McFadyen of England, Jannsen of the Netherlands, and Heiser of Luxembourg have probably all seen better days but should be up there.
