[edit] The Report

This is the second Eastern Rock Go Tournament (see the first) held this year during the long Easter weekend on 23rd and 24th April. Charlotte Olympia With six players from Auckland, five from Wellington and seven locals there was a good mix. The number of young players was a feature of the event, with six players 16 years old or less, Junsuo Chen being only nine.

The venue was Hettinga Estate Winery on Pakowahi Rd in Hastings. It was a great venue with a large room used for wine sales and functions available for the tournament, although many players preferred to play outdoors in the autumn sunshine warming the European style courtyard. The three relative beginners in the field were permitted to place 9 stones handicap against any players stronger than them. This made opponents work a little more and allowed these new players to be included in the Mcmahon tournament.

After the first day of play, sixteen year old Ken Xie was the only unbeaten player, having beaten Manda Wang, David Xie and David Wu. It was great to have Tong Too, President of HB Ethnic Association, Jenny Too, Vice President of HB Chinese Association come with us for dinner at the Singapore restaurant in Napier that evening and a team game on a demo board gave us a chance to introduce surprised diners to go. On day two, Ken continued his run with a win in the fourth round only to trip up in the last round against Graeme Parmenter. This left a tie for first with David Wu, both sharing the same SOS.

Sponsorship was particularly generous this year, with Hettinga Estate Winery making the venue available free of charge, the Chinese embassy providing major prizes, and for the Junior players some very good prizes from Alexandre Dinerchtein, Russian professional player, and organiser of the KGS Insei Leagues. The tournament was once again organised by John Chen with financial assistance from Eastern Rock. Thanks to Jenny and Tong Too for their donation of fruit. Again many thanks to Graeme Parmenter flight from Dunedin giving the big help with Tony Chen for organizing this tournament.

Suggestions were made of holding the NZ Championships in the Bay in future years and if the pleasant weather and well run tournament this year are any indication, it would make for a memorable event.
