[edit] Introduction

The World Amateur Go Championship ("WAGC") has been an annual event since 1979 (except for 2003 omitted because of the SARS epidemic). It allows one player per country/territory. China has produced the winner in 16 of the first 28 years, Japan 8, Korea 3, Hong Kong (still considered a separate territory) 1. The most prolific winner is Imamura Fumiaki of Japan, winner in 1980, 1987, and 1991.

See the WAGC Category for individual WAGCs.

[edit] New Zealand's selection method

The New Zealand Go Society has a WAGC points system for selecting our representative.
