2020 NZGS Open Tournament Details and Registration

NZGSLogo

Dear Go Players, registration for the 2020 NZ Go Society Open tournament is now open.

Tournament details

Date:
21st and 22nd November 2020

Venue:
474 Gt South Rd, Otahuhu, Auckland, New Zealand

Entry Fee:
$25 for people earning an income and registered in advance.
$15 for people not earning an income and registered in advance.
$30 and $20 for people who do not register in advance.

Draw:
If there are sufficient entries there will be an Open division for strong players (2dan and up) and a second division for weaker players. Players with a one Dan rank can choose the division they wish to play

If the number of entries is not sufficient, there will be a single tournament using a McMahon draw to keep stronger and weaker players separate for the first two rounds.

Both divisions will have 3 rounds on Saturday and 2 on Sunday.

  • A Swiss draw if there are two divisions. A McMahon draw will be used if there is one division with strong and weak players..
  • No two players will meet more than once.
  • Players on the same score will be matched in each round as far as this is possible.
  • Players from different cities will be matched where possible.

Playing conditions:
New Zealand rules will be used.

‘Fisher’ time control will be used. Each player will start with 20 minutes and will gain an additional 20 seconds after each move they make.

  • We are using Fisher time control because:
    • It is more forgiving when you run short of time (you can play a few fast moves and get some time back)
    • It does not have the abrupt change of conditions that happens now when you go into byo-yomi.
    • It stops people from taking longer than the time scheduled for a round, which can happen with our traditional time controls.
    • Most games have about 250 moves, 125 each. So each player will have 20 minutes plus 125 x 20 seconds - 62 minutes in total.

Questions and disagreements must be referred to the tournament organiser who will make a final ruling.

Determining the winner:
Players will be ranked by

  1. Number of wins. The person who wins the most games comes first
  2. Head to head results. If two people win the same number of games, the result of the game against each other determines the overall result
  3. S.O.S. (Sum of opponent’s scores)
  4. If players still cannot be separated, the result will be a draw.

NZGS Points
The NZGS has a points system, the ‘WAGC points table’ to determine who is invited to represent New Zealand in international tournaments such as the World Amateur Go Championship and the Korean Prime Minister’s Cup.. These tournaments are a great experience - The honour of representing the country, meeting people from around the world, professional reviews and more. Generally transport, accommodation and food are provided once you get to the host country and one or two days of sightseeing is included. Sometimes even the transport to the tournament is subsidised! They really are good.

The person at the top of the list is invited first, if they do not want to accept then the next person and so on.

Points are won at the New Zealand regional tournaments, the New Zealand Open tournament and in the Australasian Digital tournament.

Points are deducted from players who benefit from going to the international events also all points, positive or negative, are reduced by ¼ each year.

The current WAGC points table and more details of our system can be seen on our web site: https://go.org.nz/index.php/wagc/points-table
