Dear Go Players, some news and a free Go board in Morrinsville.
Next week, as part of the Chinese New Year celebrations, Yeeyang Lee is organising a demonstration of go in central Auckland for a day. The plan is approximately ten tables with 9x9 boards for the public to try. Date is 21st Feb 12-5pm on the square down from the art gallery. If you are in town and can help with the demonstrations - please come along. Maybe you will even score a decent game if things are quiet or enough people turn up.
The Auckland University Go night is restarting. This will be at the Auckland University in the Maths/Science building, probably on Friday nights from 5pm. We need to give an indication of how many people may attend, if you think you may come along, please email your name and approximate rank to secretary@go.org.nz. Â
Australia has challenged us! To a match organised similarly to the Nongshim Cup. Each country will have a team of 8 players: 3kyu, 2 low dan, 3 high dan. In the first round the lowest ranked players meet. After each round the loser is eliminated, the winner stays and in the next round plays the lowest rank player remaining from the other team. This continues until one team has no players left. Sounds like a fun competition to play in and to watch. We expect this event to start sometime in April and proceed for a couple of months with one round per week. Final details are still to be decided. If you would like to be on our team please reply to secretary@go.org.nz with your name, rank and contact details.Â
We are planning two online tournaments, a teams event starting towards the end of March and our traditional online tournament starting early in May.Â
- For the teams event we are thinking of playing 6 rounds over three weeks, two reasonably quick games each Sunday night.
- The online tournament will keep the same format as in previous years, but with an open division, division 2 and a handicap division.
- If you have suggestions regarding these tournaments please let us know: email secretary@go.org.nz
Invitations to these events will be sent out soon.
Karen in Morrinsville (about 30km east of Hamilton) has contacted us saying:Â "My ex partner (who died quite some years ago) was a Go enthusiast, and I still have his Go board and stones. Â I have so far been unable to contact Hamilton Go Club (maybe the details on the website are out of date?) Â Is there somewhere / someone who would be interested in these or do I just get them to the Op Shop? Â It seems a real shame to just throw them out."Â
Here are pictures of the board (or is it two boards?) Karen is offering. If you want the set, and can either collect it from Karen or pay her for postage and packing, please let us know and we will put you in contact with her.

Best regards to Everyone
